Today is dedicated to two really special friends–Shailja Gower & Rick Kelly– who live life to the fullest very day, care about others, work hard, play hard, are always humble and kind and I am so fortunate to call friends–oh, and they are kicking cancers ass!
We started our day with a visit to the cancer center in Savannah and spent time visiting with patients and sharing stories. Also to an update on new treatments and technology for cancer.
After a great ride, we ended our day with some great local mexican food at the hotel with the folks from Live For Today, a young adult cancer organization. We met Travis, and heard his pretty unbelievable story about his cancer journey.
My dedication today is for two of my teammates & friends through work. Joyce & I have been friends for years and made it through several acquisitions. She was sunshine and fun and a joy to be around. This time last year, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and ran out of time much too quick in October. Mark was just recently diagnosed and receiving treatment now- working on kicking cancers ass!
My ride group for Day 3- Kevin, Pete & Jessie. We executed a cool pace line together and had a blast! As Kevin said “beast mode”😊
But, its not about the bike.
On the surface, you see us cycling. What you don’t see is the give and get of support, the friendship and love, the emotion, the hugs, the tears, the smiles.
We had a great day together and it was good to see Pete, Jesse and Kevin be in the moment and enjoy the ride. Kevin won his battle with cancer, Pete is still fighting, and Jessie is primary caregiver to his wife as she continues her fight.
At the start of our ride, my dedications for today
Each day, we dedicate our ride to one or multiple people we will ride for that day. We write their initials or names on our calves to carry them with us through the miles, to keep them in our minds and hearts, to give us strength and to send positive energy and love to them.
Today, I dedicated my ride to two very special people in my life, Jim Mitchell and Rick Schofield. I chose today, since Sundays are always special to Jim, and Savageman is on a Sunday which is a special connection for Rick & me. Both of these men have touched my heart & my life and ahve been special friends for a long time. They both also have and are, kicking cancers ass with strength, grace, positivity and humor. Love you both-thank you for your friendship & love, and inspiration!
We rode several hours today and my group was so great! I rod with Meredith, Maureen and John and our support crew was Theresa, Lee and Pete. We stopped at a local firehouse along the way to chat with them and share a bit about Ulman Foundation. We helped them wash their new fire truck, met three cancer survivors and got a tour of the house and their BBQ chicken lunch operation! The people you meet and the experiences along the way are just incredible.
After our send-off celebration in Baltimore, my ride group- Rick, Margo, Terri and I- headed out through the streets of Baltimore. We wound our way around and out to Anne Arundel County where we picked up the B&A Trail. It was very windy, but sunny. while riding in Baltimore, it was hard to chat much, but once we got on the trail it was a bit better. First day, first ride, first time we met! Once we finished or ride leg, we loaded the truck, grabbed lunch together and headed to VA to meet the rest of the ride groups and find out what what was next. We dont really know the plan, we just follow the directions of the leaders and “trust the process”. It challenging and wonderful at the same time.
When I first told people I was going to participate in our Ulman Foundation Key to Keys ride, the response was usually around getting to ride my bike (which I love), and helping the Ulman Foundation (which I also love). Those are the obvious things from the outside view. What is hard to explain are the connections made, the impact one has and receives, and the love shared from the moment we started this journey at 6:30 AM today. We split into ride groups (4-5 riders) each day plus our support drivers.
My ride group stats for today: 33 miles. 6 personal stories. Lots of photos. A few fish tacos. Multiple connections. Much love. New friendships. ONE GOAL.♥️
Up bright & early today, arriving at the Ulman Foundation office at 6:30 AM to meet as a team, pack up the SAG van, and find out our ride groups for the day! We rode our bikes as a team the short distance to the Museum of Industry… and through a crowd of friends and family for our send-off celebration! Got to see some people I haven’t seen in a while, and the best surprise- my buddy Rick Schofield! 🙂 lots of hugs and quick chats followed by our dedication circle.
We start each day with a dedication circle, holding hands and taking turns sharing a personal dedication for our ride that day. Names or initials of those people are written on our calves or hands and accompany us throughout our day.

Let the adventure begin! Bright and early tomorrow, I will join the rest of my team at the Ulman Foundation office in Baltimore where we will gather, unite and dedicate our day, and our week to those affected by cancer. We will ride miles and miles each day to spread awareness, raise funds to support our programs, bring some positive energy and strength to those we meet along the way and make a difference.
Cancer changes lives…SO DO WE!
Here is my link with a slice of “my story” included. I’d love to have you “join” me on this journey by following along through my blog..I promise it will brighten your day, touch your heart and inspire you!
